Lake Kivu on the border of Rwanda and the Congo is one of the largest lakes in Africa. Beautiful lake with a panorama of tranquil blue waters and green mountains.
Lake Kivu actually be one of the excellent in Africa. The extent of 2,220 square kilometers with a depth of up to 400 meters. Panorama can make tourists feel at home looking at it linger. Not to mention, tourists can get to know the lives of Rwandan or Congolese people who settled and lived as fishermen around Lake Kivu.
Lake Kivu lies on the border between Congo and Rwanda in Central Africa regions. The lake empties into the River Ruzizi. This lake is one of the three lakes that can explode in nature, the other two being Lake Nyos and Lake Monoun. Vulcanik activity under the lake is thought to be the cause of the explosion at this lake.
At the bottom of the lake as deep as 480 meters, there are fairly active volcanic activity. The volcanic activity causes methane gas which then agglomerate and rise to the surface. On the surface this was met with methane gas carbon dioxide contained in the lake, causing a large explosion. This explosion could even overturning a boat or can even lead to a kind of tsunamis in the lake's surface.
Methane and carbon dioxide that settle to the bottom surface of the lake would be very dangerous, if the volcanic activity occurred in the vicinity. Volcanic activity can cause pressure on the surface of the lake, then the methane gas and carbon dioxide in it can rise to the surface and then 'exploded'!
"Think of it as sodas. If there are shocks and the bottle cap is opened, then the soda will explode out quickly. Just like that, the content of the gas in Lake Kivu will explode if shaken by volcanic activity. Moreover, the area around many volcanic mountain, "said Professor Brian Moss from the University of Liverpool.
Although it contains harmful gases and could kill millions of people, Lake Kivu is one of many beautiful destinations in Africa. Beauty lake which can not be denied, is inversely proportional to the threat of danger from the bottom surface of the lake.
